Day 8

Promises

by Meghan Frye

I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. (Genesis 9:13)

Genesis 8 begins with, "But God remembered Noah." This comes after we read that the waters had covered the earth for 150 days. God is all knowing.  Surely, He did not forget Noah. The word remembered is used to help the reader relate to God in human terms. I wonder if Noah was questioning if he had been forgotten by God.

After a year of waiting, Noah exited the ark with his family and the animals on dry ground. The first thing he did was build an altar to the Lord. After this long time of waiting, Noah was, at last, seeing the faithfulness of the Lord. God not only remembered Noah, but He entered into the first covenant with mankind. God promised to never flood the whole earth again.  He invited Noah into this covenant by telling his family to be fruitful and fill the earth. It is an unconditional covenant. Seeing a rainbow in the sky would be a reminder to all generations of God's promise to Noah.

As you read the Old Testament, there are other covenants that God made with His people. Every covenant is a reminder of how God longs to be with us. Every covenant points to our need of a Savior.

Questions to Ponder: Has there ever been a time in your life when you wondered if God remembered you? Did you search Scripture and seek council from godly people in your life to help you walk through that time?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your promises. You have given us Your Word so that we can study Your faithfulness. We can learn about Your character. You are all together good. You are patient and loving. You see us in our trials, and we are never forgotten by You. Your Word tells us that You will never leave us or forsake us. You remember us. Please forgive us when we question Your faithfulness. Lead us, Father, to walk in the truth of Your Word. Amen.
